My first poetry book, “You’re a Deity: An Inspirational Poetry Collection” is about all the ups and downs of life, and having the strength to overcome any obstacle. This book is inspired by a poem I wrote when I was active on the app, Poetizer. the poet, ATTICUS, hosted a poetry contest on the app, which was as follows:

The first line of your poem has to start with the line: “Let your truth speak…”

The poem I wrote for this contest is also the name of the book, “You’re a Deity,” which you can read below.

You’re a Deity

Let your truth speak
Because no one’ll say it for you
Hold your chalice high, let everyone see- 
The ethereal sunlight glowing in your veins
Because you have nothing to lose 

You’re not a person, you’re a deity
Your cup is far from empty 
The legend hasn’t been written 
Divinity is only the beginning

I normally don’t place in contests, so I was really excited and shocked when my poem placed 2nd in that contest. I’m super proud of how this poem turned out and that it scored 2nd place in a really big competition.

Cover Inspiration and Design

For the cover design of my book, I played around with a lot of different cover styles, but none of them really fit the book. My grandpa, Wayne Broussard, is a brilliant photographer and was kind enough to let me look through his images and use one for my cover. I decided to go with an image of a sunflower/ sunfloweresque picture because I wanted the inspirational theme to carry from cover to manuscript.

I framed it in a simple cross frame and placed it on a light gray background to a) help it stand out and b) give it an ethereal look. The cover above is for the ebook format of my book. On the paperback cover design, I made the spine be a yellow color from the flowers so that it would both standout on the shelf.

I chose the color yellow and gray because in color psychology, yellow is cheerful, hopeful, joyous. Gray felt better than using plain black or white because things in life are not always black and white, sometimes there’s that gray area where an answer isn’t always clear.

These colors compliment the manuscript by adding a visual meaning to the content within the cover.

In closing…

This book was my first book. It’s short, Amazon KDP was unpleasant as ever, but I’m happy that its out there in the world, especially for readers today. Everyone can use a little comfort and inspiration. Also, most of the poems that are in this book have been published in over 40 literary magazines, which I may list here or I may not. We’ll see on that lol.

I made the flyer for the markets I am attending. I go to market to both market my branding work and my artsy side hustle.

I designed the site on Canva, and focused only on what I needed. I’ve had the copy written for awhile, I just needed to add the visual elements. The entire website has been designed to feel like you’re walking through an eclectic art gallery that’s owned by a crazy black cat.

The home page is a landing page that directs you to the next exhibit, which would be “Art Commissions” or “Contact.” The “Art Commissions” page is full of helpful info with a clean layout that helps readers better read the info. My “About” page is a dump of info about me, but it also follows the same gallery feel. The “Contact” page is also set up like an art gallery, showcasing some hand drawn lips and a contact and subscribe form.

I also have a “Links” page that is linked to a QR code, which is set up like a LinkTree. This page also has a form that way people can commission me for artwork at in person events if they wanted.

I want to share some important information before giving you the recipe. As much as I love coffee, I don’t have any fancy gear like an espresso brewer or even a Keurig. I have just a small, simple, drip coffee setup. And that’s how I’ve made all my lattes that I’ll be sharing.

Another note to mention. Yes, I am an avid coffee drinker and will try just about any coffee put in front of me. That does not mean that I’m super good with coffee terminology. I’m going to call every coffee drink I’ve made a latte. It could be classified as an oat milk latte or a Frappuccino. I honestly don’t care what it’s called. I made a thing, it tastes good, and I’m sharing. Please no nitpicking on my terminology.

For all of my coffee recipes, I aim more for taste than sweetness. I try to pay attention to the amount of sugar I put into the stuff I make, because, I’ll admit, I’m chocolate, caramel, candy bar, junk food junky. So I have to watch my sugar intake on other things. I need to put a little bit of effort into keeping up with my health.

With my fake-ish legal terms out of the way, here’s the recipe:

Salted Caramel Butter Rum [non alcoholic] Latte

*Warning: makes about 16 oz*

Ingredients:

-1 tablespoon of Cafe Bustelo Ground Espresso

-2 cups of water

-1 tablespoon of salted caramel coffee

-1 tablespoon of butter rum coffee

-Your milk of choice

-Caramel Syrup

Steps:

1. Brew your espresso, salted caramel, and butter rum coffee together. If having cold, pour in a glass and put in the fridge. If having hot, pour in a glass and go to step 2.

2. Add in your milk of choice to taste and some caramel syrup. If you want stronger flavors, you can mix in .5 tablespoon of caramel extract/ butter rum extract.

3. Enjoy!

This recipe does have a tendency to be super strong though, so make only if you want to sip on it for the next week lol.

Kahlua Iced Latte [no alcohol]

*Warning: makes about 16 oz*

Ingredients:

-1 tablespoon of Cafe Bustelo Ground Espresso

- 2 cups of Kahlua flavored coffee

-2 cups of water

-Chocolate syrup

-Your milk of choice, I prefer oat milk

-.5 tablespoon of vanilla extract

Steps:

1. Brew your espresso and coffee together. Pour it into a cup and put in the fridge if drinking it chilled. If not, proceed to the next step.

2. Mix in your milk, vanilla extract, and chocolate syrup. Your chocolate syrup and milk will be to your taste.

3. Enjoy!

   A side note, I did try out a different version of it. I love chocolate and cinnamon together, but I haven’t perfected that version of this recipe. The few times I’ve tried, its been so strong that I’ve had to carefully drink it for about 2 weeks and it always leaves me wanting something sweet afterward. I’m honestly not sure that I’ll be able to get this version to turn out, I might just call the cinnamon idea a reject lol XD

A side note, if you want to mess with people, buy a bag of pumpkin spice coffee the next it comes out and baby it for the entire year. Then in July you can brag about your yummy coffee before everyone else can just because you can lol. Yes, I am evil and I’m not ashamed, mwahahahahahaha XD.

Pumpkin Spice Latte

*Warning: makes about 16 oz

Ingredients:

-1 tablespoon of Cafe Bustelo Ground Espresso

-2 tablespoons of Pumpkin Spice Coffee (I use Starbucks brand because it has a stronger flavor)

-2 cups of water

-A dash of pumpkin spice

-1 tablespoon of brown sugar

-.5 teaspoon of vanilla extract or cinnamon extract

-Milk of choice, I use oatmilk

Steps:

1. Brew your espresso, ground coffee and pumpkin spice dash together. If you put the pumpkin spice seasoning into the coffee after you’re done, it leaves chunks in your coffee that you can strain out, but that takes time, and time is money lol.

2. After brewed, pour in a cup and put in the fridge for a few hours if chilling. If not, then pour your coffee in a cup and mix in your brown sugar, vanilla extract, and milk of choice, I prefer oatmilk.

3. Stir or shake it all up.

4. Enjoy! If you like more cinnamon in your pumpkin spice, you can switch out the vanilla extract with cinnamon extract.

Smoky Vanilla Latte

*Warning: makes about 16 oz*

Ingredients:

-1 tablespoon of Cafe Bustelo Ground Espresso

-2 tablespoons of Bettergoods brand Smoky Vanilla Flavor (can be found in Walmart for about $6)

-2 cups of water

-1 tablespoon of sugar

-1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

-1 cup of oat milk

Steps:

1. Brew your 2 tablespoons of Smoky Vanilla coffee and your 1 tablespoon of espresso.

2. If you’re making it chilled, pour into a glass or a container of some kind, and stickit in the fridge for about 4 hours? However long it takes to get chilled. If not making this coffee chilled, skip to the next step.

3. After your coffee is done brewing or chilling, you’ll add your sugar, vanilla extract, and oat milk. Shake, stir, mix it all together until its mixed up.

4. Enjoy!

A Different Kind of Brand Strategy

While most brand strategists rely on traditional brand archetypes, Kathryn took inspiration from an unexpected source: role-playing games and video games. Her branding system is loosely inspired by the 13 types of characters you can play in games like Dungeons & Dragons.

Are you a bard, naturally charismatic and performance-driven? A druid, connected to nature and organic sounds? Or perhaps a barbarian, raw and powerful in your musical expression?

“Instead of following traditional brand archetypes, I decided to base my strategy from the character types you can play in a role-playing game or video game. It makes the process more fun, not just for my client, but for me as well. With this process, I help my client transform their brand into something more, and they get to have some fun at the same time,” Kathryn shares.

This innovative approach resonates particularly well with her target audience: musicians aged 27 to 50 who are either preparing for their first festival performance or looking to rebrand before embarking on a bigger tour. These are artists who already have some music under their belt and are ready to take their careers to the next level.

Solving the Identity Crisis

The music industry is filled with advice about branding, but Kathryn noticed a critical gap. “There’s constant talk about branding and creating a brand for yourself, but no one is really providing clear guidelines on how to do that,” she explains. “And if they are giving guidelines, they are so technical that someone who isn’t well versed in the terminology will be like a deer in headlights.”

Kathryn focuses on two core problems: identity and messaging. She helps her musician clients identify who they are in their music career and how to use that identity to connect with their audience. By making the branding process fun and accessible, she removes the intimidation factor that stops many artists from developing a strong brand presence.

From Aspiring Musician to Brand Strategist

Kathryn’s journey into music industry branding came from a deeply personal place. “I myself am a very creative person. I was actually trying to make it as a musician myself,” she reveals. However, she discovered she had incurable stage fright that prevented her from performing in front of large groups.

Rather than abandoning her passion for music, Kathryn found another way to contribute to the industry she loved. “Even though I couldn’t actually perform in front of a large group of people, I still wanted to be part of the music industry. I found the entire industry just fascinating by how it works and all of its intricacies.”

Her educational background prepared her well for this career pivot. She holds an associate’s degree in arts and a bachelor’s degree in professional and technical communications. She’s also earned certifications in digital marketing and YouTube profile building. Additionally, she served as an executive contributor for Brainz Magazine for about a year, an accomplishment she’s particularly proud of.

Inspired by Music and Mentorship

One band played a pivotal role in Kathryn’s journey: Shinedown. Their album “Attention Attention” captivated her not just for its commercial success but for its narrative depth. “That album had a lot of hit songs on it,” she notes. The band became the first to break Van Halen’s record for having the most hits on the charts, a distinction they now share with Three Days Grace.

But it was the album’s storytelling that truly inspired her. The narrative of the album is about a person walking into a room and facing their inner demons. “That album was pivotal because the lyrics really inspired me to get back into writing and thus start my journey down getting into the music industry.”

Kathryn also found inspiration in Chris Wright, a significant figure in the Knoxville music scene. Wright was a metal singer who overcame tremendous adversity after suffering a stroke about 16 years ago. Despite being told he would never walk again, Wright defied doctors’ expectations, returned to college, and got back into the music industry. He now performs in a Green Day cover band and releases his own music.

“If he hadn’t had his stroke, he would probably be pretty famous right now,” Kathryn says of Wright. “He’s got the chops and he has all the industry knowledge.” His resilience and determination serve as a constant reminder of what’s possible in the music industry. Kathryn captured more of Chris’s inspiring story in an interview she conducted with him, which provides deeper insights into his journey and recovery.

What Sets Her Apart

Kathryn operates in a relatively unique space. “I have no competition, really, at least in Knoxville,” she notes. While Nashville has a few others doing similar work, Kathryn’s refusal to follow traditional branding rules and her experimental approach to branding archetypes make her stand out.

As a self-described hardcore introvert, Kathryn appreciates that Knoxville offers a thriving arts scene without the overwhelming crowds of larger cities. “I get easily overwhelmed in large crowds. In Knoxville, I don’t run into that problem as much.”

Building Connections

Kathryn takes a multi-faceted approach to finding and connecting with clients. She’s active on LinkedIn, Threads, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. She also attends concerts and networking events throughout Knoxville. Her online presence is consistent and easy to find: most of her social media handles are simply her name, Kathryn Holeton, making it simple for potential clients to locate and follow her work.

While she operates primarily as a digital business, Kathryn is happy to meet with local clients in person when they’re comfortable with that arrangement. This flexibility allows her to serve both Knoxville musicians and artists from across the country.

Looking Toward the Future

Kathryn has ambitious plans for her business. Within five years, she hopes to scale into a small agency with a few other designers and a salesperson. “I would like to have scaled into an agency by then, just working with a lot of people in the entertainment industry, and a few other industries,” she shares.

This vision reflects her commitment to growth while maintaining the personalized, creative approach that makes her work unique. By expanding her team, she’ll be able to serve more musicians while continuing to innovate in the branding space.

Fallout Fringe Fest is a non-profit acting company and event that happens in Las Vegas. They work with alternative actors and actresses to get them into the acting scene. They host a week long acting festival every year in Las Vegas to help this talented actors and actresses gain experience and exposure.

This is the design I submitted. I was inspired by their first design, which was minimalistic. It was the stereotypical mushroom cloud on a red background, with the cityscape and people outlined in black with yellow highlights.

Their previous design felt like a mix between the 1920’s theatre posters and the 1940’s war propaganda posters. I decided to lean into that design style. The colors are what their website colors were at the time. While my design was ultimately not picked, I’m still proud of how it turned out. I am planning on repurposing it for a current fictional music festival, and designing tickets and wristbands to go with it.

C.L Brierley, the renowned U.K. author of “The Unexpected,” and the owner of The Writer’s Community Promotion Page on Instagram, has an Ebay shop where she sells vintage clothes, shoes, purses, and jewelry. She needed a logo for her shop because she wanted it to look more professional.She wanted a circular designed logo with clothing pieces inside. She specifically requested a purse, shirt, and shoe, with her name in an American typewriter font.

Before I started designing her logo, I browsed through her Ebay shop (she has a lot of good stuff too by the way, highly recommend checking it out) and saw that she was selling a lot of T-shirts and converse shoes. The purses were all handbags as well.I used those items as inspiration for the items she requested. I made a converse shoe, t-shirt, and handbag, and used the colors light tan, honey brown, and gold on those items to evoke a luxury feel with a flashback to vintage style.

I used the dark green color as the background to add a richness to the rest of the design and to add to the vintage styled flashback. Since she’s added her logo, her Ebay shop has gained more serious buyers and she has also opened an Instagram account to further promote her shop. Kelly Maxwell is a musician that is based in Chicago, Illinois. She is known for her covers on Tik Tok. She commissioned a logo for her debut single, “Better On My Own,” which releases April 19, 2024.

The Process

The inspiration for her logo was her first name an her last name initial, “Kelly M.” She wanted a modern look with different fonts. We settled on this design because it fit with her design preferences. I personally like this design because it reminds of industrial design with a modern style twist.

I experimented with how different fonts looked together, and how I could meld them together. I put the “K” and “E” together because it made a triangle, and the outline felt striking. I made the 2 “L’s” look like the Roman Numeral, “2,” because they gave the effect of pillars.

I turned the M sideways to differentiate it from her first name. Lastly, I put the “Y” at the bottom and made it part of the border because I wanted a chalice effect. I wanted the “Y” to look like it was holding the other letters up, it also draws the eye up to the other letters.

Kelly Maxwell

Pazzo is a nostalgic rock band based in Chicago, Illinois. I made their Electronic Press Kit (EPK) and their website. Their style preferences were a spooky 90’s gothic vibe for their website and Electronic Press Kit. I used their original logo and designed around it.

Inspiration and Process

I started working on their EPK first. I decided to have a black and white image of them as the header with their logo centered on the bottom of it because it felt clean and natural. I then added their social and contact links in the upper right hand corner. From there, I added their About, Music, and Gig List sections. All links are clickable on their EPK. I really liked how the header looked on their EPK, so I decided to emulate it on the home page of their website.

Pazzo’s website is organized into the following pages: Home-About- Tour - Music & Videos- Contact. I used the same design I used in the header of their EPK on their home page, took away the social links, and added a headline that supports their current album. I added 2 buttons, one clicks to a landing page of places you can stream their current album and the other leads to the “About” page of their website. I went with this design because it felt cohesive, simple, and easy to navigate.

From there, I designed the rest of the site like a normal website with Pazzo’s style preferences in mind. I used a garnet red as the accent color, and I used black and white as the main site’s colors.

Listen to Kick The Devil

“Kick the Devil” was released in October 2023. The track is based off my lyrics, “Kick the Devil.” Kick the Devil was a collaborative music project between Brian Briery and I. I designed the artwork for our song.

Inspiration and Design Process

For this song, I wanted to design art that was bold and memorable. My design was inspired by gothic artwork. I also liked fire, and lots of it, in a tasteful way of course. I made a fire- styled background for the gothic title font to make it stand out against the dark red background of the art. The design for the single art was also a collaborative project between Brian and I. It was his idea to go the flaming gothic style direction.

Song Writing Process

Brian and I produced the instrumentals and collaborated on the lyrics and melody. The song was inspired by the times in life where someone overcomes depression.

The Dead Cassettes are an indie rock band from North California. I redesigned their logo and made an Electronic Press Kit (EPK) for them. Their design preference was nostalgic 80’s with neon highlights. They original logo was a script styled font of their name, but they wanted something in a different style that was more authentic to them.

I designed their logo to look like it was hand drawn and also etched on glass. In the upper left corner of the cassette, you can see a tv-screen like pattern. I added that detail because a lot of their reels on Instagram had that kind of filter. I designed the font of their logo to incorporate the neon style. The font I chose is more of a Sans instead of a Script, and it has more of n 80’s/90’s feel.

After I designed their logo, I started working on their (EPK). I decided to display all of their information on a black background because that would make the neon lettering of each section standout more. There was a lot of information that needed to go onto the document, so I opted for a grid pattern for their information. I was actually able to squeeze more information onto their EPK because I chose the grid pattern. All of the links are also clickable.

Lalu the Author is an anonymous poet on Instagram. I designed their logo based on their design specifications. Lalu the Author’s design preference was an anime inspired owl.

Inspiration and Process

I wanted to owl to look anime/ cartoon-ish but not overly either. I wanted a classy look with a cute flare. To pay homage to Lalu the Author’s original logo, I added 2 vines to the left and right of the owl to play with symmetry and to give it a boundary. I made that design choice because I wanted to play with the symmetry and asymmetry of the over all feel of the logo, which fits with the vibe of their poetry.

The Writer’s Community Promotion Page is a page that runs free promotions for writers of all genres and kinds. C.L. Brierley is who runs the promotion page. She runs the page for free to make promotion more accessible for writers who don’t have a budget for promotional services. Inspiration and Process

The original logo was an open book. I decided to stick with the book inspiration because it fit with the vibe of the page. I noticed on the page’s reels, there was a font that looked like a typewriter, so design wise I leaned more into that. I chose a typewriter and I used the font “American Typewriter” for the name of the promotion page that wraps around the logo. I also added a brown paint splotch behind the typewriter to make the typewriter stand out more and to add an artistic element.

I designed the website to reflect the needs of the page and so the logo fit well into the layout.

The Miss Scarlett EP was a collaborative music project between Keith Curtis and I. Keith and I’s collaboration on the song, “Miss Scarlett,” lead to a full EP of six songs in the Americana/Folk Genre. The two singles off the EP are “Miss Scarlett” and “Red Tail Lights.” Keith managed the production of the EP, and I assisted in writing the lyrics, songwriting, and marketing. “Miss Scarlett, EP” was released in Summer 2023. For the EP, I also designed the artwork.

Inspiration and Process

For the artwork, I wanted to keep the design simple, but focus on the nostalgic elements. For me, Fall time is a nostalgic time of the year. It takes me back to all of my birthdays as a kid. (I’m a fall kid lol.) While listening to the EP, i was also reminded of the other kind of nostalgic that included jean jackets and highways. I wanted to capture that feeling in the artwork.

I used a stock image of a woman standing on a road and edited it so that it was more saturated and had higher contrast. I then added a blue transparent box and used a readable cursive script for the title of the EP. I didn’t want to detract too much from the woman in the background.
